After viewing the Christian Dior Fall 2011 Couture collection, which WASN'T designed by John Galliano, show which took place in Paris yesterday I'd say we all have learned a very important lesson: MORAL CLAUSES HAVE NO PLACE IN THE FASHION INDUSTRY!! As you all know (unless you live under a rock) John Galliano was fired from Dior for his arrest following a anti-semitic, drunken tirade while drunk at a Paris bar. Apparently such behavior violated a "morals clause". A morals clause?! In the fashion industry?! Oh that's rich... Listen, I find Galliano's behavior as repugnant as the next person. Ok, I'm lying. I actually really didn't care that much. Why? Because he's not paid to be "moral" or politically correct. He's paid to be a brilliant designer. And he is. Look, I probably wouldn't want to be his friend but I'd definitely wear one of his amazing dresses. I'm lying again... I would so be his friend. But for people who wouldn't, I understand where you're coming from. He's of questionable moral fiber. I get it. However, he should not have been fired. As I said, he's paid to be a designer. Anything else he does is not our business. Think of all of the different people you pay for services: waiters, doctors, lawyers, hairdressers, mailmen, cab drivers... Do we ask them if they're racists? Do we ask them if they have a drinking problem? If they cheat on their spouse? No. Why? Because it's not our business!! It doesn't matter what they do on their own time as long as they do the job we're paying them for. And make no mistake about it, the executives at Christian Dior really didn't care. At all. Not even a little bit. They simply had to ACT appalled and fire him so people (by "people" I mean "actresses"...paging Natalie Portman) didn't boycott the label. They had to ensure that people would still wear their designs on the red carpet. But here's the problem, this latest collection was designed by someone other than Galliano and the result is a collection no one is going to want to wear anyway because it's mediocre at best. And that's being generous.
